Stop #3: Kindness Before Sunrise — A New Beginning in Athens and Piraeus
The journey from New York to Athens wasn’t just a change in geography.
It felt like a quiet crossing into a slower, more soulful rhythm of life.
I left my Manhattan hostel in the dark, taking a taxi to JFK and boarding an overnight flight to Greece. Hours later, I arrived at 4:00 a.m., when the sky still held its stars and the streets felt hushed with possibility.
I can step into the unknown with openness.
I can trust that new places will meet me gently.
I am beginning again.
I boarded the airport bus to Piraeus, the port city on the edge of Athens. As we rolled into town, the streets were eerily empty, wrapped in early-morning stillness. When I arrived at my hotel, I discovered the Wi-Fi wasn’t working — suddenly making navigation and communication difficult.
I felt tired.
But I stayed calm.
I can pause instead of panic.
I can ask for help when I need it.
I am supported.
I hailed a taxi — and that’s when kindness arrived in the form of Carlos, a local driver. He listened patiently, drove me safely to the Lilia Hotel, and before leaving, gently kissed my hand, wishing me a warm welcome to Greece.
It was such a simple gesture.
And yet, it carried me.
I can recognise kindness when it appears.
I can receive it without question.
I am deeply grateful.
Climbing the steps to the hotel (yes — more steps; this journey seems full of them!), I was greeted by Dimitri, the owner. Though check-in wasn’t until 3:00 p.m., he welcomed me warmly and promised to prepare a room as soon as one became available.
I settled into the cozy lounge with a cup of coffee, surrounded by the soft hum of people beginning their day. There was comfort in that ordinary rhythm — breakfasts being enjoyed, conversations murmuring, morning light slowly filling the space.
At 9:00 a.m., Dimitri approached with a smile.
“Your room is ready.”
Such a small gesture.
But it meant everything.
I can rest when my body asks.
I can accept generosity without rushing.
I am learning to arrive softly.
I climbed the final stairs of the day, took a warm shower, and slipped into a much-needed nap. Later, I would explore the charm of Piraeus — but for now, I rested in the quiet reassurance of a country that had already begun to show me its heart.
Sometimes kindness comes quietly.
In a hand kiss from a taxi driver.
In a cup of coffee while you wait.
In a host who makes you feel seen.
And sometimes, that is exactly how a new chapter begins.
