Matala Magic — Colour, Curves & the Confidence to Trust

Matala Magic — Colour, Curves & the Confidence to Trust

Some places meet you with colour.
Others meet you with people.

Matala did both.

The day began, as it so often does now, with breakfast beneath the trees at Oleander Garden. Rex lay curled faithfully beneath my chair, the sun lifting gently over the mountains as if reminding us there was no need to rush.

I can’t begin days like this hurried.
I can let calm lead the way.
I am learning that slow mornings build strong days.

Carolyn and I set off toward Matala, a town known for its hippie history, sea-carved caves, and carefree spirit that still lingers in the air. Even before we arrived, it felt different — lighter somehow.

The streets were alive with murals, music, and laughter. Colour spilled from every corner. Shops felt playful. People smiled easily.

Matala didn’t try to impress us.
It invited us to relax.

I can’t resist joy when it arrives so openly.
I can lean into it.
I am allowing myself to feel light again.

Lunch was fresh fish by the sea, the Libyan Sea shimmering beside us. Time slowed just enough to savour everything — the food, the setting, the company. Nothing needed to be added.

Then came the drive home.

Winding mountain roads.
Sheer drops.
Curves that demanded trust.

Carolyn joked nervously about another cliffside moment, but something had shifted in me. I felt calmer. More grounded. Less reactive.

Not fearless — but steadier.

I can’t control the road.
I can control my response to it.
I am trusting myself more with each curve.

When we finally reached the main road, relief softened into quiet pride. Not because we’d conquered anything — but because I’d noticed the change within myself.

That evening, Oleander Garden came alive. Travellers from all over the world gathered, stories overlapping, laughter flowing under the lights.

We reconnected with Emilee and Frank, a warm, kind French couple we’d met earlier. Over dinner and a splash of raki, conversation turned naturally into possibility.

Tomorrow, we decided, we’d go to Spinalonga together.

No planning pressure.
No overthinking.
Just ease.

I can’t force connection.
I can let it grow naturally.
I am surrounded by kindness.

Crete continues to give.

And I continue to receive —
with a fuller heart than I arrived with.
