Stop #3 Continued: Ferry Hopes & Island Grace — A Day in the Aegean

After a short rest at the Lilia Hotel, I felt refreshed and ready to explore. I stepped out into the streets of Piraeus, the sun warm, the sea air light with salt.

My first mission was simple: find out where and how I would catch the ferry to the Aegean Islands the next morning.

Piraeus moved with quiet confidence. Boats rocked gently in the harbour. Locals chatted over coffee. Suitcases rolled across stone. I found the port, gathered the information I needed, and felt a small sense of relief settle in.

I can’t rush what comes next.
I can prepare calmly.
I am learning to trust the flow.

With everything arranged, I returned to the hotel and slept deeply.

The next morning, I rose early, ate a light breakfast, and walked to the ferry. As the boat pulled away, the city slowly dissolved into blue. Buildings softened into shapes. Sounds faded into water and wind.

It felt like stepping into a painting.

I can’t carry the city with me forever.
I can let go when it’s time.
I am moving forward.

I spent the morning wandering one of the Aegean Islands — narrow alleys, brightly painted doors, sunlit courtyards. Life felt unhurried. After lunch, curiosity nudged me further, and I booked a small ferry to Moni Island.

There was just one problem.

I was the only passenger.

The boat wouldn’t leave until more people arrived.

So I waited.

I can’t force timing.
I can stay present while I wait.
I am at peace with slowing down.

As the minutes passed, I met Christine, the kind woman in the ticket booth. Her excellent English came from time spent living in England, and she made sure I felt informed and welcome. We chatted easily, the way strangers sometimes do when there’s nothing to rush toward.

Eventually, two Greek women arrived. Smiling, they offered me a handful of fresh pistachios while we waited together. We became companions without introductions, sharing snacks, glances, and anticipation.

Another quiet gift of kindness.

I can’t travel alone for long.
I can meet connection everywhere.
I am grateful for shared moments.

When we finally reached Moni Island, it felt almost unreal. Deer wandered freely beneath pine trees. Peacocks strutted confidently in the sun. The land felt untouched, gentle, and entirely unconcerned with human urgency.

I explored slowly, saying little, noticing everything.

I can’t improve places like this by doing more.
I can honour them by being still.
I am deeply present.

Later, I took the ferry back to the main island, then another ferry home to Piraeus. The day settled softly around me. Tired, content, and full in the best way, I ate a warm gyro by the harbour and watched the lights shimmer on the water.

Back in my room, I climbed into bed with a grateful heart.

The journey continues.

And with each crossing,
the magic deepens.

I can’t predict what lies ahead.
I can meet it open-hearted.
I am exactly where I need to be.
